BAFTA nominations & diversity inclusion: the shift we all wanted
Updated: Mar 18
Coincidently or not, the year we all were mostly at home was the year that women prevailed in BAFTA nominations. It is a sign that when we look inside our heart, our true selves awakes. And so does the film industry. In a first for BAFTA, four women have been nominated in the Director category. Three of the nominated directors are also nominated for Film Not in the English Language.
Cinema is granting us one positive aspect of the pandemic, which is the shift we were all looking for. Among the best film nominations, all of them tackles diversity in one way or another. Nomadland (my favourite) meets Fern, a woman in her 60s who sells most of her belongings and purchases a van to live in and travel the country searching for work. The Father brings Anthony Hopkins in yet another cult role, an ageing man who refuses the help of his daughter. It is an accurate simulation of dementia. The Mauritanian is a story of abuse and injustice based on true facts. It painfully brings back to the surface the open wounds of 9/11 and prejudices against Muslims. Promising Young Woman is a feminist thriller about violence against women. And even The Trial of The Chicago 7, the most Hollywoodian feature nominated for BAFTA best film, relives the countercultural protests in Chicago in 1968. The film resonates deeply with the violent killings in the USA last year. So yeah, BAFTA is now reflecting the social impact cinema has always had by praising the voices we haven't heard from on mainstream.
A total of 50 feature films received nominations. Highlights include the seven nominations for Nomadland and Rocks. The latter is an authentic British depiction of a deprived London area as well as a cry for the social changes Britain needs to face. Gender, identity and sexuality are not on the agenda because it is cool or in fashion but because representation matters. Suffocating or silencing diversity doesn't make them disappear. On the contrary, it generates trouble.
Mank, that seems to be the favourite for the Oscars, received 6 BAFTA nominations.
David Fincher’s reinterpretation of the legend of Citizen Kane might not be in sync with all the other nominations but it surely intrigues the audience for its technical search for perfection. Besides, it elevates a forgotten cinema figure by reminding us how Hollywood used to craft their stories in the golden years.
We can only change the way we craft our stories by understanding why we keep choosing the same models. It's good that Mank is among all other movies that portray diversity.
Find below the list of all BAFTA nominations. The awards ceremony is set to go live on April 11th.
